Why stone needs a specialist+

Stone moves, stains and marks differently to porcelain. It needs the right substrate, the right adhesive, careful blending and proper sealing. Done well it lasts for generations. Done badly it fails in a year. Because we are also a registered ARDEX and MAPEI applicator, wet-area stone is waterproofed properly underneath before it is laid.

Stone guide: the stones we work with+

Crazy paving

Irregular flat pieces fitted together in a random pattern. A natural, relaxed look for floors, courtyards, paths and even shower floors.

Hinuera stone

A pale, buff-coloured stone quarried in the Waikato. Popular for paving, steps, walls and cladding.

Marble

Classic veining in polished, honed or tumbled finishes. Softer than many stones and easily etched by acids, so sealing and the right cleaners matter.

Travertine

A warm, earthy limestone with natural pits and texture. Usually filled and honed or tumbled, and needs sealing.

Limestone

Understated, soft tones in a honed finish. Porous, so it needs sealing and gentle, non-acidic cleaning.

Slate

Layered stone with a naturally textured surface and deep tones. Thickness can vary, so it needs a carefully built setting bed.

Granite

Very hard and dense, with excellent durability. A strong choice for steps, outdoor areas and high-traffic floors.

Terracotta

Fired clay with a warm, rustic character. Needs sealing to protect it, and suits many interior and sheltered spaces.

How we work.

01

Assess

We check the substrate, the stone and the site before a single tile is cut, because stone punishes shortcuts.

02

Prepare & waterproof

Levelled, primed and waterproofed by a registered ARDEX and MAPEI applicator.

03

Lay & cut

Stone is dry-laid, blended for tone and vein, then cut and fixed with the right adhesive for the material.

04

Seal & finish

Grout, seal and a final clean so the stone looks like it should from day one.

FAQ

Natural stone tiling questions

Do natural stone tiles need to be sealed?

+

Almost always. Most natural stone is porous, so a quality penetrating sealer helps protect it from stains and moisture. The right sealer depends on the stone and where it is used, and sealing is normally done after grouting and refreshed over time.

What is the best natural stone for a bathroom?

+

It depends on the look you want and how the room is used. Marble, travertine, limestone and slate are all popular. Some are softer or more easily marked by acidic cleaners, and floors need a finish with enough grip when wet. We are happy to talk through options before you buy.

Does natural stone need waterproofing in a shower?

+

Yes. Stone and grout are not waterproof, so a shower needs a proper waterproofing membrane beneath the tile. As a registered ARDEX and MAPEI applicator, we apply that membrane ourselves before tiling.

What is crazy paving?

+

Crazy paving is irregular, flat pieces of natural stone fitted together in a random pattern with grout joints between them. It suits floors, courtyards, paths and even shower floors, and every installation ends up one of a kind.

Can natural stone be used inside and outside?

+

Many stones can, but not all. Some suit interiors only, and outdoor stone needs to cope with weather and be slip resistant. We will help you choose a stone that suits the spot.

Do you do natural stone tiling outside Taupō?

+

Our natural stone work is mainly in Taupō and surrounding areas. For high-profile, high-end projects we will travel anywhere in New Zealand.
