Stone paving

Crazy paving and Hinuera stone.

Crazy paving and Hinuera stone+

Crazy paving uses irregular pieces of natural stone fitted together in a random pattern. It gives courtyards, paths and terraces a relaxed, natural character, and no two installations are the same.

Hinuera stone is a pale, buff-coloured stone quarried in the Waikato, popular for paving, steps, walls and cladding. We have laid Hinuera stone steps and landings in Gisborne.

Waterproofed and built to drain.

FAQ

Outdoor tiling questions

What is Hinuera stone?

+

Hinuera stone is a pale, buff-coloured New Zealand stone quarried in the Waikato near Hinuera. It is popular for paving, steps, walls and cladding because of its warm, natural look. We have laid Hinuera stone steps and landings in Gisborne.

Can tile be used outside in New Zealand weather?

+

Yes, provided the tile or stone is suited to outdoor use and installed properly. That means the right adhesive, a surface that falls so water drains away, movement joints, and a finish with good grip when wet.

Is crazy paving good for patios and courtyards?

+

It is a great choice. The irregular pieces give a natural, relaxed look and the grip underfoot is generally good. We have laid natural stone crazy paving in a courtyard with an outdoor fireplace and in a timber-lined terrace at Kinloch.

Do outdoor tiles need waterproofing?

+

Where a tiled area sits over a living space, such as a balcony or deck above a room, it needs a proper waterproofing membrane under the tile. Because we are registered ARDEX and MAPEI applicators, we can do the waterproofing and tiling together.

Can you tile steps and landings?

+

Yes. We have tiled stone steps and landings in Hinuera stone and granite steps with a deck beside a lakeside patio. Steps need accurate setting out so risers are even and edges are safe.

Do you tile swimming pools?

+

Yes. We have installed a glass mosaic in a swimming pool in Gisborne. Pools are specialist work, so please contact us with the details and we will let you know if it is a good fit.
