Why waterproofing comes first.

Why waterproofing comes first+

Tile and grout are not waterproof. A shower or bathroom is only watertight because of the membrane hidden beneath the tile, and when that layer is missed or done poorly the damage usually appears behind the walls, long after the tiling is finished.

We are a registered ARDEX and MAPEI waterproofing applicator, which means we apply these systems the way the manufacturers specify. We then tile the bathroom ourselves, so the waterproofing and the finish are planned and delivered together.

What we waterproof

Every wet area, sealed properly.

  • Shower bases, walls and niches
  • Bathroom and ensuite floors
  • Window reveals and upstands
  • Floor wastes and channel drains
  • Pipe and tap penetrations
  • Tiled patios and balconies over living space

How we waterproof

Every corner, joint and pipe sealed first.

ARDEX tape and pipe collars sealing a shower corner and tap penetrations before waterproofing
02Corners taped and every pipe penetration collared before the membrane goes on.

Our waterproofing process.

01

Assess & prepare

We check the substrate, falls and drain positions, and prepare the surface so the system bonds properly.

02

Tape & collar

Corners, wall and floor junctions are taped, and every pipe and waste is sealed with collars.

03

Apply the membrane

The waterproofing membrane goes on in coats across walls, floors, niches and upstands to the manufacturer's specification.

04

Cure, then tile

The membrane is left to dry and cure before tiling begins, so the finish sits on a sealed, protected surface.

One trade for waterproofing and tiling.

FAQ

Shower waterproofing questions

Is your waterproofing to National E3 standards?

+

Yes. Every wet area we do is prepared and waterproofed to National E3 standards by a registered and experienced ARDEX and MAPEI applicator.

Does a shower need to be waterproofed?

+

Yes. Tile and grout are not waterproof, so water can pass through them. A waterproofing membrane under the tile protects the framing and the rest of the building, and New Zealand's Building Code expects wet areas to manage internal moisture properly.

How long does shower waterproofing take?

+

The membrane goes on in stages, with drying time between coats before tiling can begin. The exact time depends on the system, the temperature and the size of the area, so we confirm the schedule with you and your builder at the start of the job.

What is the difference between ARDEX and MAPEI waterproofing?

+

Both are respected manufacturers of waterproofing membrane systems for tiled wet areas. We are registered applicators for both, so we can choose the system that suits your substrate and project, and apply it the way the manufacturer specifies.

What areas do you waterproof?

+

Showers, bathroom and ensuite floors, niches, window reveals and the junctions around floor wastes and pipes. We also waterproof tiled outdoor areas, such as patios and balconies, where a membrane is needed beneath the tile.

Can you waterproof a shower before another tiler tiles it?

+

Please talk to us early. It is usually best for the waterproofing and the tiling to be planned together, because details like niches, upstands and drains affect both.

Do you waterproof for builders and architects?

+

Yes. We work with builders and architects on new builds and renovations, and can coordinate waterproofing around your programme. If your project needs particular paperwork for the waterproofing, let us know early.
